we live in a disposable society. from plastic bags at supermarkets, the disposable water bottle we buy at the convenience store, the straw we use to drink our green smoothie, the coffee cup we use for our daily coffee – every one of these items, all used for less than fifteen minutes, will sit in our landfill for hundreds of years. quite simply, the math just doesn’t add up. luckily there is a solution, firstly we can simply say no to these disposable items. secondly, we can replace these items with reusables. here are some of my favourite brands that are good quality, well priced and most of all, live up to their sustainable ethos.

whoever said one person can’t make a change, obviously has not met greta thunberg. a swedish, teenage environmental activist who in less than a year, has rallied millions of students to strike around the world to engage in the largest climate protests in history. we don’t all have to be greta thunbergs, but we all be everyday activists by making small, consistent changes to our everyday habits. here are some practical tips on how to be an everyday activist.

in this modern age self-care can often be an excuse for over-consumption. want to feel relaxed? buy a candle. want to feel nourished? buy a new moisturiser. want to feel loved? buy a new pair of shoes. however, self-care is more than just about stuff, true self-care is an act of love that allows you time to nurture yourself, so that you can be of service to others and the world around you, more than anything, taking care of yourself is antidote to burn out. we live in a time where burnout rates are higher than ever, we need to be able to put on our oxygen masks on first, before we can look after others.

The zero waste living movement is centred on reducing the waste you send to landfill and reducing the amount of plastic used in your life. But I want to show you that living a truly zero waste life means also not wasting your life away. Quite simply, plastic is Mother Nature’s non-renewable resource, and time is ours. We shouldn’t waste either one. Dr Anita Vandyke

climate change is the biggest issue of our generation. plastic pollution will annihilate our ocean life. our planet is on fire. as an environmentalist, i am overwhelmed by these issues and tackling these problems can seem daunting. this is why i coined the term ‘the everyday activist’. the everyday activist takes a bottom up (individual) approach, as well as a top down (policy-driven) approach. they consider the impacts of their everyday actions and how it will affect the world around them. i believe that your everyday actions are a reflection on how you will live your life. habits maketh the man, and they will ultimately define earth’s destiny. that is why, i’ve included a list of five actions we can incorporate into our everyday lives that will transform us into everyday activists. small changes can make a big cumulative difference, and today is the day to start.
